One of the most challenging things that most people face when making the decision to build a business online is trying to juggle the whole J.O.B thing along with taking care of the kids and managing everything that life throws your way.
I have been approached by many people almost on a daily basis that asks me, Scott, how the heck do you build an online business when you work full time?
For me, this was one of the most challenging things that I’ve had to do in my entire life and like many of you guys and gals out there, I thought this was nearly impossible.
There were many factors that played a part in my success and I’ll be sharing them with you guys today.
I’ll be going into detail and showing you how I managed to do this along with how long it took before I was able to give my boss the finger and walk out for good.
In the following article, I’ll be sharing 3 tips that have helped me and ultimately paved the road to success for me.
I would advise you to stick around if you have struggled with this in the past, or if you’re currently contemplating this right now.
I’ll be sharing some pretty interesting tips with you on how you can utilize these to achieve the same results as me or even better.
Are You Guys And Gals Ready?
Time Management
When I first started out here 4 years ago, it seemed like time was my enemy and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to find enough of it.
As if working a full-time job didn’t take up enough of my time as it was, I also had to deal with many other things throughout my day.
I was lucky if I was able to set aside an hour or 2 each day to work on my business and feel like I did something productive for the day.
This boils down to 2 key elements which I’ll be listing for you guys below!!
Creating A Schedule- This is one of the key elements that is crucial to any kind of success in the online world.
Why create a schedule?
You follow a schedule at work or some kind of routine right?
Why wouldn’t you do the same when building your own online business?
There is a good reason for this and all the more reason why you should follow in their footsteps.
If you want to eventually give your boss the finger like I did many years ago then it’s imperative that you get on some kind of schedule.
Due to my time restrictions, I could only work an hour a day on my business so I penciled in 1 hour each day to work on my business.
It doesn’t matter how much time you devote to this!!
What DOES matter is that you’re productive the entire time that you’re working.
You should devote as much time as you possibly can to this but if you only have an hour a day like me, then that’s perfectly fine.
Get Yourself A Whiteboard- This is where you’ll be writing out your weekly schedule along with any goals you would like to reach for the week, month, or year.
This is also where you can write down any tasks that you need to complete for the week or tie up any loose ends you may have.
Whiteboards run anywhere from $10 to $50 bucks depending on the style and features you want to be included.
I decided to go with a pretty basic one that only cost $12 and I really love it.
Make Reasonable Goals
If you’re still working a J.O.B while trying to build a business online, the first goal that may come to mind is quitting your job and doing this online thing full time.
This is perfectly normal and one of the many mistakes that I made when I first got started.
Instead, why not keep things simple and focus on making your first $1 online?
I’m sure that you’ve heard the expression keep it simple stupid (K.I.S.S Method)
This is particularly true for building a business online and something that has really helped me out when I first started learning how to build an online business.
Here are a few of my goals that I made when I first started:
Short Term Goals:
- Get my first website established and ranked in Google
- Get a decent amount of traffic to my site
- Make my first sale
Long Term Goals:
- Earn enough to quit my job and do this full-time
- Double what I was earning with my former job
- Earn enough money to start traveling the world (I’m still working on this one)
As you can see above, I started out with small goals and eventually worked my way up to larger ones and I would recommend that you guys do the same thing.
Make your goals realistic and something that you feel is attainable in the amount of time you have set to reach it.
Use The Negativity That People Throw Your Way As Motivation
For some unknown reason it seems like your family and friends like to throw shade your way when they hear that you’re doing something crazy like learning how to build an online business.
My now ex-wife did a particularly good job of doing this and I had to constantly deal with her negative attitude about this on a daily basis.
Whenever anyone tells me that I can’t do something I aim to prove them wrong and that’s exactly what I did whenever she doubted me and told me I would never make a dime.
I used this as fuel to keep me motivated and I was bound and determined to prove to her and all the other haters out there that I was going to make this work for me no matter what.
It took me a while for me to get to the point where I made her and everyone else eat their words.
They now have a totally different perspective on this now and see things in a whole different light.
My Closing Thoughts
It can be quite difficult to learn everything you need to know to be successful online while holding down a full-time job.
Trust me, I’ve already been there and done that and like I said around the beginning of this article, this was one of the toughest challenges that I’ve faced in my whole life.
However, one of the most rewarding ones ever and I wouldn’t go back to the 9-5 grind if you paid me a million dollars.
I’m sure that by now you may be wondering where on earth did you learn all of this stuff and how much is it gonna cost for you to get started?
Don’t worry, I won’t be recruiting you into the latest and greatest MLM recruiting scheme or nothing like that so you can rest assured.
What I would like to do is introduce you to the world of affiliate marketing where you’ll learn how to build a website based on a hobby or interest of yours and turn it into a full-time business.
This involves selling other people’s products and getting paid a nice commission each time someone makes a purchase based on your recommendation.
The thing I like the most about this type of business is that the cost to get started is practically non-existent and it costs very little to maintain and keep it running smoothly.
Does this sound like something that would interest you?
The place that has shown me how to be very successful within the affiliate marketing industry and has allowed me to quit my full-time job after 10 months is Wealthy Affiliate.
If you’re struggling to make ends meet and sick of living paycheck to paycheck, I would highly recommend that you check them out for yourself and see how they can help you.
It’s Free To Get Started and your starter membership contains everything you need to get up and running.
Now that I’ve shared my personal journey with you guys about how I was able to pull this off, I would like to hear from you.
Are you currently working a full-time job while trying to get your online business off the ground?
How’s that going for you?
What goals have you made for yourself?
I would love to hear all about it as well as answer any further questions you may have in the comments below.
