One of the biggest issues that most people face when first getting started online is finding a niche and narrowing this down to find your targeted audience.
When I first started here 4 years ago, this was one of the many stumbling blocks that stood in my way and prevented me from moving forward in the online world.
At the time, I didn’t even know what the heck a niche was and I didn’t have the slightest clue about how I was supposed to narrow this down.
It took me quite some time before all of this started to make sense, but once it did, everything started to click and fall into place.
In today’s post, I want to talk a little bit about niches!

I’ll also be showing you guys 4 ways to narrow all of this down so you can reach out and find your targeted audience, answer their questions, and provide them with a solution to their problems.

What Exactly Does The Term Niche Mean?
A niche is nothing more than a group of people looking for something in particular.
This could be anything from “how to train your dog” to “how to find the best prices on airfare”
When was the last time you Googled something?
Do you mind me asking what it was?
Well, the keywords that you type into Google will determine what niche market you would be categorized under.
Let’s say, for example, you’re looking to book a hotel and search for the cheapest flights out of Vancouver Washington.
Can you guess what niche this would fall under?
If you said the travel niche you would be correct!!
The search term “Cheapest flights out of Vancouver” is already narrowed down pretty well and I’ll be showing you guys how to narrow down any niche similar to this, so you can find your targeted audience, next.
4 Ways To Narrow A Niche Down & Find Your Targeted Audience
I can still remember my first niche like it was yesterday.
I have always shown a huge interest towards electronics, video games, and other techy gadgets for most of my adult life.
I thought, why not choose electronics as my niche?
So this is what I decided to go with it!!
Little did I know that not only was I was entering a niche that was highly competitive, but also one that I would need to break down into smaller components if I wanted to have any kind of success with this.
Did you guys know that there are likely 1,000’s of micro niches inside the electronics niche?
This term is really broad and this could cover everything from smartphones to laptop computers and everything else in between.
Needless to say, I wasn’t able to make a dime with this and I eventually changed niches and had to start over again from scratch.
There are a plethora of ways for you to narrow a niche down and I’ll be showing you how to do this next so continue reading.
Who Is Your Targeted Audience?
For this particular example, I’ll be going with the make money online niche since I happen to already be in this niche and have had a huge amount of success with it.
The MMO(Make money online) niche is massive and your targeted audience could literally be anyone who wants to make money.
Do you know of anyone who wouldn’t like to make money?
I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t be interested in making more money!!
Anyways, I’ll stop blabbing and continue moving on!!
Your audience for the MMO niche could be:
- A person working a minimum wage job looking to better themselves
- College students looking to earn money to pay their student loans off
- Baby Boomers looking to earn extra money to supplement their retirement pension
- Stay At Home moms looking to earn extra money to supplement their husband’s salary
- Disabled people who can’t hold down a job due to their disability
This is just a small handful of the many people you could target in this niche and I hope you guys are starting to see the potential that’s available here.
What Problem Does Your Audience Need Help Solving?
Now that we’ve determined who our audience is, we now need to figure out what problem they need help solving and provide them with a solution.
If you look at the list of people that I’ve listed for you guys above, they all have 1 thing in common with each other.
Do you know what that would happen to be?
I’ll give you a hint, they’re all looking to make money!
You would simply need to connect with these people, show them some of the best legit places on the net that will teach them how to earn money online, and direct them to the ones you feel are the best.
Let’s Break This Down Even Further
Any niche has the potential of having 1,000’s of mini niches hidden inside of one another and you could earn a full time living from just 1 of these.
Here are just a few that come to mind:
- How to avoid scams
- Make money taking surveys
- Affiliate marketing
- Website builders/themes/hosting

What About Demographics?
Let’s dig a little deeper and narrow this down by a specific demographic.
If you’re wanting to target a specific audience you can narrow this down to include certain demographics and listed below are a few that come to mind.
- A 20 something male office worker who makes $50k a year who shows an interest in online marketing
- A college student in his early 30’s that earns a yearly salary of $30k who’s interested in becoming a writer
- Single moms in their mid 20’s that earn $60k a year and is interested in learning more about starting a blog
Targeting specific groups of people by demographics is best done through FB ads.
You can set either a daily or lifetime budget and narrow down a specific group of people that you want to see your ad based on the demographics that you specify.
Questions You Need To Ask Yourself Before Getting Started
Before making the decision to go into any niche market there are a few questions that you need to ask yourself and I’ll be listing these for you guys below.
Building a niche website should be thought of as a long-term project!!
This isn’t something you can build out in only a few weeks and have it start producing an income for you overnight.
Questions you should ask yourself before getting started:
Do you feel like you could write about this niche for the next 3-5 years without losing interest in this or running out of things to write about?
What qualifies you to talk about this topic and what could you bring to the table that other people have failed to do in the past?
Are you genuinely interested in helping people, or are you more interested in making a quick buck?
These are all questions you need to keep in mind when starting out and this will determine whether you would make a good fit for any niche that you may be thinking of going into.
