As an affiliate marketer who has been earning a full time living for close to 5 years now I get asked this question quite often.
As a newbie who is just getting started online, you may think that it’s better to go with a niche that can make you the most money, right?
Trust me, I can totally relate to this as I did the same thing when I first started out in the online world.
Is this the wisest choice or are you better off going with something you’re passionate about instead?
Well, in the following post, I’ll be giving you 3 powerful reasons why it’s imperative for you to go with something that you’re passionate about over profit if you want to have any type of long term success in this industry.
When I first started out back in 2012-2013, I actually had gone through 3 busted niches and failed several times because of going with profit over passion.
I invite you to follow along as I share my experience with you guys and show you how I was able to finally turn a profit from going with a passion of mine instead of chasing after profits.
Let’s Get Started, Shall We?
Understanding Your Niche & Identifying Your Targeted Audience
Before we even get into passion vs profit, I think it’s important that you guys have a firm understanding of what your niche is and ideally who your targeted audience is first.
Here are a few examples of niches below to give you an idea of what I’m talking about
- Gaming headset niche- Targeted audience- Men between the ages of 16-50 who play 1st person shooter games.
- 4K Televisions- Targeted audience- Men or Women between the ages of 21- 45 who show an interest in technology and electronics.
- Health & Fitness- Targeted audience- Men or Women between the ages of 25-60 who are passionate about staying in shape and eating healthy.
When deciding what niche to go into, it’s highly imperative that you learn a little about your targeted audience first and do some research on what they’re looking for so that it’s easier to deliver this information to them.
Make sense doesn’t it?
Understand your niche first and this will make things go so much smoother in the long run.
Now that you have a basic understanding of what a niche is and how to determine your targeted audience let’s dig into the next topic which is 3 reasons why it’s always best to go with a passion over profits when choosing your niche.
1) It’s Easier To Write Content
Let me ask you guys a question.
Would you rather write about something you’re passionate about and could talk about for hours on end
OR,
would you rather write about something that you have no idea about and the topic is 1 of the most boring topics ever, but there is the potential to earn lots of money?
Which one would you go with?
When I break it like this it naturally would make sense to go with the first option as you’re likely to stick it out and have a whole lot more success if you actually enjoy what you’re doing.
I find my work to be much more enjoyable if I’m actually interested in the topic I’m writing about and it makes my job so much easier.
2) It Doesn’t Seem Like Work If You’re Passionate About It
If you have attempted affiliate marketing in the past then you know that this requires a pretty long time investment and a great deal of hard work and effort on your part.
Personally, for me when I first started out in the online world, I would devote at least 12 hours to my business when starting out.
I know that many of you may not be able to make that much of a time commitment at first and that’s perfectly fine.
The point I’m trying to make here is if you go with something you’re passionate about like a hobby or interest of yours it won’t seem like work.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “Do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” haven’t you?
This especially holds true when you’re picking a niche and something that I tell everyone to go with.
3) You’ll Be More Likely To Stick With It
Statistics show that nearly 90% or more of people who attempt affiliate marketing or building out a niche website usually end up quitting within their first 30 to 60 days.
Why is this you may ask?
Well, it’s actually a combination of multiple factors but due to my personal experience and helping hundreds of people over the years, it comes back to choosing passions over profits.
For example, just the other day someone asked me to take a look at their site and give them some pointers on how they could improve it.
I was glad to take a look and offer them some feedback on ways to improve their website.
However, I noticed that this fellow had decided to go with Boots as his niche and this had me quite concerned.
While this may seem like a good niche to get involved with, you may find that writing about boots could be quite boring and you could end up running out of things to talk about fairly quickly.
There are only so many boot styles in the world and you could probably write about everything related to this niche in a year or less.
What do you do after that?
Well, you could always branch out if you branded yourself and bought a unique domain name that allowed you to do so.
Other then that, there isn’t a whole lot of options available besides starting over in a new niche and repeating the same process as before.
Unfortunately, this is another case of someone choosing profit over passion and needless to say, this person is already thinking about quitting.
You should always base your niche on something that you’re interested in talking about and something you could see yourself writing about for years to come.
My Closing Thoughts
Going with a passion or interest will always beat out profits any day due to the simple fact that if your heart isn’t in it, and you have no interest in what you’re writing about, then you’ll likely quit before you turn a profit.
Any niche can be profitable if you approach it the right way and devote enough time, energy, and hard work to it.
I have personally earned money in a multitude of various niches over the last 5 years and every niche is different.
Some are easy while others are highly competitive and will take a great deal of more time before you start earning a consistent revenue from them.
I would, however, recommend that you start out with 1 niche and once you master it then branch out into other niches as you see fit.
