Hey everyone, today I want to talk with everyone about the purpose of comments on your website. I will also be covering some of the do’s and don’ts of leaving comments on other people’s website. Along with showing you how leaving quality comments on other people’s website and receiving quality comments from other people really can help out your SEO.
Why do we leave comments on people’s websites?
The whole idea of leaving comments on other people’s website is if you really enjoyed their article and you would like to let them know about it. Other reasons why you would leave comments, questions, or feedback would be if you still had questions after you were done reading their post.
It’s also nice to get the conversation going and get other people involved in the discussion. This is a great way to get to know the author and gain some high quality backlinks as well.
A few tips on what you should and shouldn’t do when leaving comments
Whenever you leave comments you want to make sure you keep them related to the content. Listed below are a few things you should be doing when commenting as well as a few things you should avoid.
What you SHOULD be doing
- Make sure your comments are relevant to the post.
- Ask questions! I love it when people ask me questions.
- Try and post comments that will start a conversation and create some dialogue.
- If something you read in their article stood out to you make it be known in your comments. This will also let the author know that you actually took the time to read their article.
Here’s what you should avoid doing when leaving comments
- Avoid leaving short comments that don’t add any value to the post you are commenting on (Here are a few examples) “Nice website great job” “Great post thanks for the Info.”
- Asking questions that are clearly answered in the article. This proves that you didn’t read the article.
So what does any of this have to do with SEO and getting higher rankings in Google?
Comments should add value to your blog post and whenever Google crawls your site they will be looking at your comments as well as your content. By having quality well thought out comments that add to your article topic, this will give you more authority and give you a nice boost in the search engines as well.
Google sees this as engaging quality content and very active so they will naturally rank your content higher as a result of it. This works both ways and you should follow these guidelines when approving comments on your own website as well as leaving them for other people.
Whenever you leave comments on other websites in your niche you are also creating a quality backlink which will also help you get better rankings as well.
It’s a win-win situation for everyone!!

It’s funny when people leave comments on your site you can tell if the person really read your post or if they are just leaving a comment to get a link back to their site.
For example I had a guy leave a comment saying he really liked my post and so on, and then at the end of the comment he said if you would like to create another income stream to email him.
Well of course I did not approve his comment because all he wanted to do is present me and my readers with is business opportunity and in a back handed way – not cool, well stupid really.
But a comment like that can end up on someones website because they know they should have comments.
But there is a real difference between a real comment and someone just taking up space and adding no value to your comment section.
For a lack of a better word you want to know the “secret” to leaving comments?
Leave a REAL comment – read the post or article and then comment, ask questions, praise the writer or even disagree with the writer. But make sure you add value – it’s a win – win.
And if you can’t do that – DON’T comment!! In most cases it going to be deleted by a savvy website owner anyway.
I end up deleting a lot of comments because they are completely useless I prefer to have comments that have value and spark a conversation – and if that means less comments – so be it.
Great post Scott keep up the good work

Hi Leo,
I just hate it when people ask questions in my comments about something that’s plain as the nose on their face in my content. Not only does this make them look bad but it also tells me that they didn’t even take the time to read through my post first before asking questions. I can usually tell if they really are genuinely interested in what I got to say or if they are simply looking for a backlink to their site.
I have had plenty of people do the same thing here. Some guy told me how much he really enjoyed reading my content and then at the end of his comment he put his affiliate link to his product right in his comment. What I usually do in this situation is, if I feel that his comment adds value to my post then I will remove his affiliate link and approve his comment. If it doesn’t add any value I simply trash it.
I agree that lots of newbies that are just getting started here don’t know the difference between comments that add value to their site and ones that offer no value. They just think that they need to get as many comments as they can, even if they don’t add any value.
If everyone would try and focus on leaving real comments that add value instead of leaving a shitty comment then as you have mentioned above it’s a win-win for everyone. Google also sees your blog post as being active and highly engaging as well which I think a whole lot of people seem to overlook this.
I would much rather have a handful of comments that add value to my post then having hundreds of low quality comments. I do want to thank you so much for stopping by Leo and sharing your thoughts on this topic.
It’s much appreciated man
Cheers

Hi Scott- Another well presented article and a very relevant one. I always try to read the article or review thoroughly and give an in depth comment. It is not always easy however and I am getting better at it through practice. I encourage everyone on WA to READ your article as it speaks to everyone’s success. I found the paragraph on back links interesting as well where you talk about other websites in your niche and how you are creating a quality back link which will help to increase your rankings. That’s good information if anyone was unaware, and a great incentive to leave a well thought out comment. Excellent post!

Hi Tom,
Yes, this is a great guide that will help everyone learn how to leave professional replies. I struggled with this as well and I agree with you that it’s not easy. This is a skill that takes time to learn and once you master it this will help you with your SEO and getting higher rankings in Google. If you naturally create quality backlinks by leaving other people professional comments this will lead to higher rankings in Google and other search engines as well.
I do want to thank you for stopping by Tom and sharing your thoughts on this topic of discussion. If you ever need a hand with anything, you know where to find me.

Nice website great job.
On a more serious note, good article 😉 I often leave comments on posts that I enjoy simply because I want the author to know they are doing a good job. Also because I really enjoy it when people leave comments on my posts 😉
Also, whenever I post a new article on my blog I end it with asking people for comments. Something like: “Got anything to add? Leave a comment below!” or “Don’t be shy, ask a question in the comment box!” often helps to get the conversation going 😉

Hey Alex,
LOL Thanks so much man. This is exactly one of the main reasons why I leave comments on other peoples websites as well. I actually love it when I get comments too, but not all comments are good comments. What some people fail to realize is that when Google crawls your website they pick up your comments as well. If you have quality well thought out comments on there then you will be that much closer to reaching the first page in the SERPS.
It’s also great that you encourage feedback from your visitors and tell them to leave their questions or comments below. Anything to get the conversation flowing and keep your visitors engaged is what Google is looking for. I want to thank you for stopping by Alex and chiming in on this discussion.
Cheers
