Whenever you start out on a quest to make money online, it seems like there is a ton of distractions. You get lead down the wrong path and brainwashed by these Internet gurus. These gurus, will fill your head full of empty promises. Things like you are going to get filthy rich overnight, and that you can have money coming in on autopilot.
The reality of having an online business is quite the opposite and you WON”T see any money at all right away.
You will need to work hard to build your business:
- This includes setting up your foundation(Having the right training)
- Knowing what your customers are searching for (Doing proper keyword research beforehand)
- Getting it ready for your customers (Writing content)
- Getting ready to do business (Getting ranked)
- Opening your doors for business(Getting traffic)
- Taking care of your customers (Engaging with your visitors)
- Making a profit (Turning traffic into sales)
I am going to share the top five mistakes people make when getting started online. I would love to hear what mistakes you have made when you first got started. (Leave them in the comments below)
Here are the top five mistakes made in online marketing
Number Five- Starting up multiple niches People think they can run multiple websites and keep them running. The only thing this is going to do is cause you to get burned out and you will eventually quit. I suggest that you start out with one niche and focus all your time and attention to it.
Once you are in a position where it’s making a consistent amount of sales daily, you could start up another project if you wanted too.
Number Four-Jumping from one program to the next They are never satisfied, and they are always looking for the next best thing. There are product launches all the time and like I mentioned above people get sucked into these low quality products all the time. These gurus know this and they make a killing off these people.
Once the hype dies down they are searching for another one that they think will live up to their specifications. Not only is this a waste of your hard earned money but you are wasting your time.
I would suggest that you find a legitimate training center and get down to business.
Number Three-Focusing on the money instead of helping people out Lots of people come into this business with only one thing on their mind. I know we are here to make money but you need to understand that online marketing is based on helping your visitors out by solving their initial search query.
There’s a reason why they landed on your website and it’s because they are searching for an answer to something. If you can solve their problem by helping them out with what they are looking for, trust me the money will follow.
You just need to be patient and be willing to put forth lots of effort.
Number Two-They always want to know how much money other people are making I see this question asked at least 5 or 6 times a day over at Wealthy Affiliate the online business training center that I am a member of.This is mostly due to, once again these internet gurus.
They spend more time showing you how much money they have in their PayPal account then they do on showing you the proper way to get an online business started. People get used to that kind of behavior and when they find a real opportunity they expect the same kind of treatment.
Not only is this very rude but it’s none of their business. It’s like going out on the street and asking someone how much money they make.
Number One-Believing that there’s a shortcut to making money online This has got to be the No1 mistake that I have seen people make when they are first starting out. With all the scams out there in this industry, I can see why. You are lead to believe that if you buy their product you will somehow become a millionaire overnight. You can live out your lifelong dreams of sitting on your very own island sipping margaritas.
This couldn’t be further from the truth! Having an online business can offer you this kind of lifestyle, but it’s NOT going to happen overnight. It’s going to take lots of hard work to get your business to this place.

Hi Scott, I am actually taking a week off (my co-workers thought I am on holiday) to work on improving my website and your post couldn’t have been more timely. These are my mistakes;
1)I didn’t focus on keyword research in the beginning and due to that, my content wasn’t very structured. I was writing naturally out of my mind (which is good I guess) but everyone is also writing the same thing so it feels redundant. So I redo all my articles and make sure that I expand on one idea instead of just rambling around.
2)And because I make changes to keywords, naturally some of the permalinks/image names will change as well and there goes all the broken internal links and I spent like 2 days working on that.
3)And all the hurried writing produce lots of typo – gotta fix that one as well. Proofreading alone is not a pleasant experience.
4)I team up with some great buddies (in Wealthy Affiliate) who offers me personal feedback (not just comments) on things lacking in my website from their perspective and I work on that aspect as well. I make it a point to help them in return for the favor.
5)Backup!!! – half way through I found out that Dropbox only stored my back up until July. It’s already September!!! I don’t know what the technical glitch was, but it was horrifying enough to prompt me re-install my backup plugin and make sure it’s working good. Never take automation for granted.
So much for my holiday…but it’s totally worth it 🙂

Hi Cathy,
I’m glad that you took the time to find and correct these mistakes. These are definitely some really important factors you need to have in place if you want to start seeing results. I would never suggest that you write your content in a hurry. This is only going to lead to typos and typographical errors. In the long run it pays to slow down and take the time necessary to write quality, helpful and engaging content.
I especially like your number 4 where you team up with your WA buddies for help and support. If you want to have a successful business then you definitely need the right amount of help and support. It’s always a good idea to manually back up your website yourself. This way you have that extra sense of security knowing you always have a backup copy stored somewhere.
To backup your work manually simply go into tools in your WordPress dashboard (Back end of your site) and go to export. Click on all content, then download export file. A copy of your entire website will be saved to your computer. If your website ever crashed or you lost all your content, you would just need to load up this file.
It sounds like you have had a pretty busy holiday, and I’m glad you got the chance to make all of these changes to your website. Thanks so much for stopping by Cathy and sharing this story with everyone here. If you need a hand with anything or have any questions let me know and I would be more then happy to help you out.

I would definitely agree with you that someone just starting should not start another niche. The time involved in working on one is demanding while you are trying to learn also. Great post, thanks for sharing.
Scott Newkirk
Hi Virgie,
When you first get started online, you very well may go through a couple niches before you find one that is going to be a good fit for you. Once you find that niche, I would stick with it and try to not get sidetracked. If you focus on one niche/website you will be successful a whole lot faster, and make a whole lot more progress.
Between learning and creating content you will find that you won’t have a whole lot of time left. This is why I always recommend that you try and put yourself on a schedule, so that you divide your time up equally. Thanks for stopping by Virgie and sharing your thoughts on this.

Hi Scott,
Nice post and yes; I’m guilty of making all 5 of these mistakes when I first got started online.
With time being so precious how do you balance learning and doing?
Scott Newkirk
Hi Richard,
I think we have all made these mistakes at some point, when we first started online marketing. As long as we learn from our mistakes and continue to move forward, then we can think of it as a lesson learned. I do find it hard at times to balance learning, helping other people out, and taking action on what I’m learning.
It’s all about getting your priorities in order and sticking to a schedule. Between family time, doing your everyday activities and finding time to work on your business, things can get pretty hectic at times. If you put yourself on a schedule I find that this will help you out and make you more productive in the long run.
I also recommend that you get a whiteboard and list everything you want to get accomplished for the week on there. If you can do this it will really help you out and you will accomplish so much more this way. Thanks so much for stopping by Richard and adding to this discussion. If you need anymore tips or have anymore questions for me let me know.

Hello Scott,
You’re right on point with this article. I personally wanted to start another niche, but I stopped and started doing research and learned from other experienced marketers that it takes time and patience to build a business online. I’m glad I did because I’m starting to see some results. It’s a learning and growing process. Great info!

This business definitely takes some time to build it up. If you are willing to put in the time and patience it takes it will be worth it in the long run. I’m glad that you are starting to see some results and the more time you put into this the more results you will start seeing.
If I can be of any help along the way let me know and I would be more then happy to help you out. Thanks for stopping by and sharing this with everyone here.

I have spent a considerable amount of $$$ having a website built for me and I have not seen any results for over a year now. The company that I am working with currently has an SEO campaign in place for the site, but still no results.
It has been extremely frustrating. Do you have any tips?
Scott Newkirk
Hi Michael,
I’m sorry to hear that you have invested lots of money to have a website built for you and haven’t seen any results from it. Over the years technology has made it easier and easier to build a website today without the need to know how to code.
As a matter of fact you can have a website up and running with just 4 clicks of your mouse. They will be live in less than 30 seconds and ready to add content to it.
I would suggest that you check out Wealthy Affiliate. This is an online internet marketing training center that teaches you how to build websites, write content for them and get ranked on the first page of Google.
You can get started for free and when you join you are going to get 2 free websites, training on how to build websites as well as 24/7 help and support whenever you need it plus so much more.
I will also be there to help you out and answer any questions you may have when you are getting started.I really am looking forward to working with you Michael and helping you reach success online. Let me know if you have anymore questions and I will answer them for you.
P.S you are welcome to bring your current website with you if you want and I will help you with it
