What Is Udemy?
Simply put, Udemy is an online school.
It is a worldwide course marketplace where people go to learn different skills.
As a learner, you can find thousands upon thousands of courses ranging from marketing and business to music, cooking and even sports.
It is also an avenue for instructors to make money by creating courses and uploading them.
They earn money when learners purchase their courses.
The courses on Udemy are not credentialed so most students take them just to learn new skills or sharpen the skills they already have.
They seek to improve their productivity in their work areas. Corporate trainers can create courses for their companies’ employees.
A Little Background Story
Udemy has three founders; Eren Bali, Gagan Biyani, and Oktay Caglar. Bali came up with the idea in 2007 when he created software for a virtual classroom.
He moved to Silicon Valley, met his co-founders and Udemy was officially founded in 2010.
The founding of this amazing project was not a smooth sailing. Investors rejected the idea 30 times when the founders raised venture for capital funding.
It is then that they went ahead without aid and launched Udemy (Academy of YOU) in May 2010.

The first step is logging in using the information you signed up with. On the course browser, you will see the course categories to the left of your screen.
Place your cursor on your preferred category and a subcategories panel will appear on your right. Choose the one you like. Alternatively, if you are looking for a specific course, type its name or a keyword on the “search” box.
Clicking on a course takes you to its information page where you can see its specifications and see reviews from students who have completed the course.
You can also find a sample of the course. If you like what you see, click on “Start Learning Now” to begin.
From there you can start the learning process and explore any other options.
When you are done, you will receive a certificate of completion
How Much Will You Pay For Udemy Courses?
Every course is priced differently by the instructor or lecturer. In some countries like the United States, the minimum price for a course is $20 and can go as high as $200.
If you do not have the money, don’t be discouraged.
There are plenty of free courses on the platform.
Another good thing, you can reduce a course’s cost using coupons that are sent by instructors for promotional purposes.
Advantages of Udemy For Learners
You can learn skills at a very low cost or even for free.
Education can be expensive even when it entails learning simple skills.
Thanks to Udemy, you can learn as many skills as possible without denting your bank account.
It offers flexibility. If you are a busy person, you can create a schedule for learning your selected courses on Udemy.
You get to keep yourself busy and learn new skills.
Do you have a lot of time on your hands?
Would you like to learn a certain skill?
Head over to Udemy and do something productive with your time.
Disadvantages For Learners
Is difficult to know the best course. There are numerous courses on Udemy, some of them about the same thing. You can only determine the best course through reviews which can be misleading.
More often than not, lecturers put more effort marketing their course than improving its quality.
The courses are not accredited. Even if you give it your all, the certificate may not be of much of help.
However, you get to learn something new and that is great.
Udemy For Instructors
How would you like to share your knowledge with others and get paid for it?
How To Sign Up
When you visit their website, you will see a “Become An Instructor” tab. Click on it and follow the sign-up instructions.
From there, you will be directed to a page where you will choose a topic, create a course then connect with students from all over the world.
Advantages For Instructors
Creating a course is free. Almost anything requires money nowadays. However, here is a platform allowing you to create courses for sale without paying a dime.
It is a great opportunity to share your knowledge. You do not have to be a certified tutor to be a Udemy instructor. As long as you are knowledgeable, you can start teaching and sharing what you know through a course.
You will have a huge audience!!
When you create a course, you open yourself to students from all over the world. Everyone can find your courses and know about you if your course is top-notch.
This is amazing exposure!!
It is a great side hustle.
If your courses are not free, every time a student purchases your course you get income.
A high quality and well-priced course can bring you a decent income.
Disadvantages For Instructors
Bad reviews can ruin your reputations.
You do not control the reviews that students leave for your courses. If you have many negative reviews, potential students are going to skip your course and your income reduces.
After you submit your course for review, the verification process can be a real pain.
If you are required to prove your identity by a given date, failure to do that may see your account and content deleted.
Udemy is an amazing place to learn new skills and spend your free time. If there is something you have been meaning to learn but cannot find the money, go to Udemy and see if there is a course for it.
Also, if you have some knowledge that you think would be useful, create a course on Udemy and make some money out of it.
The Bottom Line
Learning any type of a new skill is going to take a decent amount of time, patience, and focus and you won’t see results overnight.
Also, depending on the type of skills that you wish to learn from this training platform could determine how long and how hard you need to study to get your certification completed.
Like I said earlier, these courses aren’t accredited, so the certificate you receive in the mail will do you little to no good in the outside world.
However, I would give Udemy a 2 thumbs up and a great place for you to learn anything from affiliate marketing to becoming a web developer and everything in between.
Looking For More Detailed Training & Help & Support For Under A $1 A Day?
Not interested in learning anything that Udemy has to offer you?
That’s cool and I totally get it that this training platform isn’t for everyone (Especially newbies)
Even though I would consider the training courses at Udemy to be of high quality they are also not as detailed as they could be and you’re required to pay separately for each one.
While they do run multiple special promotions throughout the year and you can find coupon codes and discounts on these courses by doing a simple Google search this can get expensive over time.
If you’re more interested in learning more about affiliate marketing and learning how to build a real a business from home utilizing a hobby or interest of yours then you might want to check out Wealthy Affiliate as a more viable alternative.
This is the place that has taught me how to do everything from building a website to learning how to build my first email list and everything in between.
It’s actually Free To Get Started and everything you need to get up and running is included in your starter membership.
I really hope this Udemy review has given you an inside look at what this is all about, how it works, and whether the courses offered here is worth your time & energy.
