You wouldn’t believe how many emails I get on a daily basis from people asking me why isn’t my website making me money?
Well to be quite honest with you guys today, there could be several reasons for this.
I thought instead of answering the same question multiple times, why not blog about it instead so that all of you can get this question answered at once?
Sounds like a plan to me, what do you guys think?
If you have been building your website for quite some time now, or if you’re just getting started, then you’ll definitely want to pay attention to what I have to share with you guys today.
It can be quite frustrating building a website and wondering when the sales are going to start rolling in as I experienced this myself so I know how you must feel about now.
In the following post, I’ll be showing you guys 5 reasons why your website isn’t making you money and what you need to do to fix it.
I invite you to follow along and leave any questions you have for me in the comments below.
1) How Consistent Are You?
1 of the most important things to get ranked in Google and generating traffic to your website is by creating consistent content for your website.
If you want to make any money with your website it’s going to require a great amount of effort and lots of hard work on your part.
How many times a week do you guys write content?
If you answered 1 or 2 times a week this isn’t going to cut it and by doing this Google won’t take you seriously or rank you very high in the search engines.
Low rankings= Low traffic which equates to No $$$
This might be good if you’re just starting out and still in your first 3 months, but if you have been doing this for at least a year or more than you need to be posting on a more regular basis.
I recommend that you write at least 3-5 posts a week on your site in order for Google to take you seriously and rank you higher in the SERPS(Search Engine Result Page)
This is one of the factors that are in your control and if you aren’t seeing the type of monetary results that you would like to see then it’s time for you to put things in high gear and start working harder.
2) How Old Is Your Domain Name?
Domain age plays a huge role in why you aren’t making any money with your website and this is one of the factors that most people tend to overlook.
Thats why I always recommend that you buy up your domain names first so they can start the aging process and be ready to rock once you’re ready to start building your business.
From my own personal experience, I didn’t start to make any money from my website until my domain name was a year old and even then this wasn’t enough money to do much with.
It wasn’t until after my domain name was 2 years old that I really started to gain authority in my niche and my income really started to grow.
If your domain name is under a year old then it is possible to make some money with it, but it’s not going to be much, so be patient and try not to let this bother you.
Take your time, be patient, and focus on creating content.
Don’t worry about rankings, traffic, or sales as these will become natural as you start to build out your content and let your site age or (marinate) as I call it.
Unfortunately, this is something that is out of your control, but with lots of hard work, motivation, and a determination to succeed the time will fly by and before you know it your domain will have some age under its belt.
3) Are You Selling Or Helping?
Don’t you just hate it when someone tries to sell something to you?
I know I do and I even go out of my way to avoid those salesmen who have booths set up inside of Walmart all the time.
Nobody likes the car salesman mentality and this especially holds true for the online world as well.
Instead of selling to people why not try and help them out instead?
What exactly do you mean by this Scott?
Let me explain!!
When writing content for your website you should be writing it in a helpful way that addresses peoples questions and provides them with the information they were looking for when they originally entered keywords in Google and landed on your website.
If you aren’t writing helpful content that connects with your audience and answers their questions, but instead you’re trying to sell to them, this could be 1 of the many reasons why you aren’t making money with your website.
There is a huge difference between selling and helping and if you have ever been sold to before then you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Check out the screenshot below to get an idea of what I mean by selling to your audience instead of helping them.
Trust me, you don’t want to be like the guy above as this will likely turn your audience off and they will likely leave your site quicker than they entered.
This is another factor that is under your control and once you focus on helping people and less on selling you’ll naturally start to see the greenbacks stacking up in your account.
4) Are You Writing In Conversational Tone?
Nobody likes to read dry and boring content that has no engagement and if you aren’t engaging with your audience then you are wasting time writing content in the first place.
In order to get people to trust you and build a relationship with you, it’s imperative that you are writing your content in a conversational tone like I’m doing right now with you guys.
Ask questions, encourage people to engage with your website, and get the conversation started. This is one of the sure fire ways to earn a great deal of money from your website.
If you aren’t writing your content in this manner then this could be 1 of the many reasons why your website isn’t making you the type of money you would like it to be.
5) How Stiff Is Your Competition?
Depending on how much competition you’re up against also plays a huge factor in when you’ll earn your first commission.
If you’re in a highly competitive niche like Make Money Online or Health & Wellness you’ll need to work extra hard and put in a great deal of work before you even start to show up in the SERPS.
Also, you’ll need to make sure that you have narrowed your niche down so that you aren’t biting off more than you can chew and making things more difficult than they need to be.
For example, I have always wanted to get into the gaming niche as this is something that has always been near and dear to my heart and something I’m extremely passionate about.
However, I wasn’t sure how to go about this at first and had failed several times with this niche.
It wasn’t until I narrowed this down to a specific sector of this massive niche that I was able to make my first couple of sales within this niche.
I narrowed this down to gaming headsets and focused solely on this 1 category and talked about all the different types of headsets on the market today.
I also discussed several other topics related to gaming and wrote other informative articles surrounding the world of gaming and headsets.
I haven’t earned a whole lot with the site as of yet but I have been making some pretty consistent sales and I can’t wait to see where things go with this site.
One of the main takeaways here is to make sure you have narrowed your niche down to a specific sector like I have demonstrated for you guys above with my headset site.
You’ll find it a whole lot easier to rank in Google and this will eventually lead to traffic which gives you the opportunity to earn lots of money from.
My Closing Thoughts
These are the top 5 things that I can think of off the top of my head that could be preventing you from earning money from your website.
If you use this list as a guide and follow it exactly how I have laid it out for you and take action, you’ll be that much closer to making your first $1 online.
Once you are able to achieve this it’s simply a matter of rinsing and repeating and after you get the formula down this will eventually become 2nd nature to you.
